An interesting and useful book on multivariate analysis in which a careful and commendable balance between the theoretical and applied aspects of multivariate techniques has been maintained. Krzanowski has employed a problem-oriented rather than a technique-oriented approach in the development of the subject matter. Tedious and messy algebraic manipulations that appear in numerous multivariate methods have been replaced, wherever possible, by simple elementary geometric ideas. In the first two parts the author deals with the methods of displaying complex sets of data and establishing a connection between simple data display and formal statistical analysis. In Part 3 he presents multivariate techniques appropriate to the data set where no a priori structure is imposed on the data matrix. Parts 4 and 5 are respectively concerned with the situations where the rows of the data matrix are grouped and where the columns are grouped. The author describes for the research worker appropriate multivariate techniques, including recent developments on discrete and mixed variable techniques, for handling different multivariate data sets. The book is written in a style that is clear, and has many illustrative examples. It includes an appendix on matrix theory, a subject index, and an adequate list of references. A good reference source on multivariate analysis for all libraries and consulting statisticians to acquire.
